week 66

This week I finished up all the wiring I can do until the front end (w/headlamps) and trunk lid are installed. I installed the gas pedal and cable assembly, emergency brake assembly and I had to redo the shifter linkage since I lowered the steering column and moved it forward; closer to the dash. I then worked on the a/c, heater and power steering hoses. To install the braided stainless hose cover on the a/c hoses I had to cut down the end of the hoses so there was enough clearance to get the crimp collars over the hose and covering. The crimp collars fit fairly snug on the hose to start with so there would be no way the collar would go over the braided cover also unless you reduce the end of the hose. Since the collars are crimped after they are put on the hose they can't be chromed or coated (because the crimping process would damage the plating) so they are taped off and painted. The whole process of making the hoses up: cutting them to length, reducing the ends, installing the hose cover, crimp collars and ends, crimping the collars, cleaning and taping them off, painting them and then installing the hoses took approximately 8 hrs. When I installed the "Cool Flex" heater hoses I ran into a clearance problem at the water pump; I had to do some trimming on the hose end cover to get it to fit. I've had to customize almost every part of this car in some way or another and that's another reason why it has taken so long to build it. But, it's definitely going to be "one of a kind".
